where can i buy discount wedding dress with good quality?

Q. next month i will have a wedding, and now i am preparing for it.i want to save money on it,so i decided to buy a discount wedding dress, but my fiance don't agree with me.he stick to buy the wedding dress at the real shop, because it has good quality, but it's so expensive.so where can i buy a discount wedding dress with good quality?

A. Please don't listen to any of the answerers that has just googled "cheap wedding dresses" which it looks like most have here. There is a very common scam in the wedding industry and that is hundreds of websites that use photos from top dress designers and claim to sell them at half the price or more. All that happens is a Chinese factory knock up a copy in a couple of weeks. Some people have done this and been pleased enough with the results but it depends on how high your expectations are. You should expect cheap rough material, bad structure and shape and potentially poor workmanship. You pay for all of those things to be the best they can be. There are no quality guarantees, no RBA (Retail Bridalwear Association) to guarantee the dress even if the company goes bust, no chance to alter the dress and no refunds if you hate it.

I would recommend going to normal bridal shops, write done a selection of dresses you like (you'll need the designer and name or number) then look online for a second hand one. Second hand in wedding dresses is nothing like second hand in any other sector. It means it was worn once for 4 or 5 hours then dry cleaned and put away. There are thousands and thousands of 2nd hand dresses out there and it's the norm for them to be sold for half the price. You can travel to view and try on the dress, you know that the dress exists and will be on time. I'm in the UK so can't suggest any sites but google "sell my wedding dress" or "preowned wedding dresses" and go with the top websites.

The other option is to call your bridal shops and ask them when their next season stock will be in. The previous season dresses will be heavily discounted but there are no guarantees that the dress will be anywhere near your size.

Okay, so do designers actually sew their work or just design it?
Q. would a designer just design the dresses(wedding dress designer) or would they create it themselves as well. or would they hire people and have a team of sew people??

A. Real designers should know how to take a dress from first concept sketch to finished garment by themselves. Only by knowing and mastering all aspects of clothing design and construction can one properly tell everyone else what to do and only then will the designer know if the staff is doing a good, high quality job. If the designer only draws pictures and has no idea how to make things then he or she has no idea if the person sewing the design is doing it correctly or not. They have no way to know if the product is well constructed and if it will fit if they don't understand how fabric and form work together to make a successful style. It's easy to draw pictures of things that are impossible to make or wear. And it's easy to look at the outside and think something looks good when it is so poorly made it will fall apart while being worn.

Most, if not all design school require student to make their own designs. That includes the top couture schools in the world all the way down to the technical colleges. There's no rooms of seamstresses who take your pretty pictures and turn them into beautiful gown overnight. All the couturier designers know how to sew, Karl Lagerfeld is a master dressmaker whose innovations changed the way clothes are made to this day. Lagerfeld holds sewing in such high regard he's often had his workshop staff take the stage at the end of shows. John Galliano had a video on Dior's website where he turned a dress inside out to marvel at the seams and stitches and sigh that he wished he could sew as well as the Master, Dior. The late Alexander McQueen said he was happiest in his studio with his fabric and sewing machines. Anna Sui learned to sew as a child and he hasn't stopped even though she can afford and does use a fully staffed sewing shop. Same with Vera Wang -speaking of wedding dress designers. Many designers become designers because they love every part of designing clothes, drawing, handling fabric, sewing, turning the fabric into something beautiful, and then seeing the idea and the fabric come to life on a person. it's all part of the process and if you don't sew, you've missed out on one of the most important parts of the design process. Many designer begin making clothes as teens -or younger than that. Sewing and clothing construction is an integral part of fashion design. Merely drawing pictures is fashion illustration, not design.

As a designer I often find business bad enough that I am forced to do it all myself. Pattern makers and sewing machine operators and cutters all require paychecks and if there isn't enough money coming in, there isn't enough to pay out. I actually consider my financial guy more important than sewers, I would keep him on retainer even if I had next to no money coming in. I simply don't know enough about the rules and regulations to do taxes and business reports myself. There are far more designers like me than like the big names like Michael Kors with huge staffs. When business is good I do hire people to sew, but they do need someone to tell them how to do it and what's required. And once again we are back to the basic idea, if I don't know how to do it, how can I tell them what to do?

It behooves all aspiring designers to know every aspect of design, from sketch to dress, Every skill you bring to the table will help you stay one step ahead of the competition and help you stand out in a very crowded and highly competitive field of work.

How many dresses is one allowed to try on at a wedding dress appointment?
Q. From http://www.theuniuni.com/fashion-apparel/weddings-events.html I want to try on different wedding dresses, but how much is one usually allowed to try on during one appointment?? I do not want to become an inconvenience to the consultant by asking to try on too many dresses.

A. The amount of dresses you try on depends entirely on how much time you have for the appointment and if you are organized with what styles you prefer. Here are some tips:

First of all, be prepared for the appointment. Go freshly showered, wearing the proper undergarments (usually a strapless bra is best). Do not wear a fussy hair do. Do not wear make up, perfume or scented body lotions. You can bring a pair of shoes, but it really is not necessary at this point. Make sure you are well hydrated and have some food in your stomach. Bring just a couple of people with you, like your maid of honor and your mother and perhaps the grooms mother if she wants to be included. Too many people at the first fitting is confusing and will slow you down quite a bit and take up valuable time.

Do some searching on line to see dresses from the designers the store carries. Make a list of style numbers you want to try on. Fax or call in the list a day before the appointment so those dresses can be found and set aside for your appointment. This is common practice at bridal shops who have top notch consultants. If you go in there not knowing what you want, it will take up valuable time -- your time and theirs. So be organized and know what you want. If you try on one style and it looks horrible on your body, then you skip all the dresses that have the same silhouette/style. Also, know that you will not be likely to be trying on your own size dress. They will use clamps and pieces of fabric to fit you into any dress you like. Do not be alarmed when you see them come out with clamps to cinch the sample dress to fit your body shape.

Arrive at your appointment ON TIME. If you find a dress, let them order the size that will fit the biggest part of your body. Size is just a freaking number, the FIT is so much more important than anything else. Do not promise to lose weight and insist on ordering another size other than your current measurements the day you place the order.

I am a seamstress who used to work for a bridal shop and I have seen the fitting nightmares and the perfect fittings. So, leave the sizing up to the pros. Also, another word of advise. Bridal shops will hate me for this, but here goes--> alteration costs at a bridal shop are a complete and total rip off. This is where the bridal shops make the bulk of their money, in alterations. They pay their seamstresses very little money while charging you an incredibly over inflated price. Often the alteration fees can exceed three hundred dollars. Find a qualified seamstress privately.

Enjoy dress shopping as it can be so much fun if you are prepared and know what to expect.

would you buy a wedding dress from ebay?
Q. I found my dream wedding dress from a designer shop - but cost £1950. So my friend typed the description in ebay and it came up, exact dress, from a shop which makes tailor made wedding dresses for only £150 but it is in China, you send them all your measurements and pick your colour then they make it according to the pic. Is it too good to be true??

A. I would really steer clear of Chinese knock off retailers. While they have the exact picture (usually copied from the designers website), these dresses are not usually made of quality material and do not always look like the picture. If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. There are plenty of websites that local wedding designer will do the same thing. While it usually isn't as cheap as the Chinese shops, they cost a lot less than designer dresses. I'm assuming you're in the UK, but I know a couple of US sites that do this and ship internationally. It's the same thing...give them your measurements, pick a color and they will make your dress. A lot of these sites actually allow you to design your own dress by sending pictures or sketches.

Here are two of the websites I know off the top of my head.
