how could I keep my wedding dress clean till the wedding party?

Q. my wedding is on july 5,2010 and I've already bought my wedding dress... my wedding gown is full of nice shiny beads so I've been wondering and kinda afraid so these beads wont fade away after 6 months.... any answers for how can I keep my wedding dress clean and shiny till my wedding day... thanksss

A. I agree with the first poster, the beads are glass or plastic, they aren't going to change colour, especially in only 6 months. Just keep it in a cool, dark place in the zipper bag/plastic it came in. The sunlight would do the most damage to it, that could fade/colour the fabric, but not the dress; so keep it in the closet.

Also, what will get the dress the most dirty is resist the urge to try it on and show it off! My mother used to own a bridal store, and I couldn't could the times she had brides come in needing cleaning or beading fixed because they would pull their dress off to try on and show every friend that asked about it. Wearing it around your house and taking it on and off is the most likely way you will dirty or damage your dress. It's easy to step on the lining and tear it, snag some beads, brush the fabric against some dirt or have the zipper get stuck if you are trying it on a lot to show it off. So although it's exciting to have in your possession, resist that urge to open it up and pull it out. Just forget it's there in the closet!

Good Luck and congrats on finding the ONE (the man and the dress)!

A. When you are choosing your dry cleaner, make sure you ask whether they have had experience cleaning wedding dresses, especially if your dress has lots of trimmings, beads or other adornments.

Dry cleaning a wedding dress?
Q. I just got married this saturday, and I need to have my wedding dress dry-cleaned. It doesn't have any weird stains on it, like wine or food or any bodily fluids--just dirt and stuff on the hem and where someone stepped on it. Does anyone know how much it is to have it cleaned? Preferably people who have had to have it done before?

Please, no point-gaming "I don't know" answers.

A. I had mine done by Imperial Gown ... the same company that works on dresses for the Smithsonian and has been featured on Oprah. They have a guarantee and it is not voided if you open the box, like most others.

My gown was a couture gown, so I really wanted it to be preserved as well as it could be. It ran about $300, but I consider it money well spent. Every so often I do open the box to look at my beautiful dress.

The Imperial Gown company's website is gown.com. If you want to be sure that your gown is perfectly preserved, I can't recommend them highly enough.

Good luck and congratulations!

CHICAGO:Where can I clean my wedding dress that will be reworn in 5 years?
Q. I need to have my wedding dress cleaned asap as we are renewing our vows in 5 years for all of the people who weren't able to make the original ceremony as well as to get better pictures (I lost a lot of hair and weight in the last 6 weeks prior to the big day), and tidy up some technical glitches from our reception. Basically, we want a do-over.

A. Many dry cleaner have a "Wedding Dress Preservation Service". Basically, they clean the dress and then vacuum seal it in a bag and put the whole thing in a box with a window in the front so you can still see most of the dress.

Be prepared though, it ain't cheap. Maybe $200.00.

How can I keep my wedding dress clean?
Q. My wedding is a year from now, I'm planning on making my own wedding dress (Totally cool right?) and I'm worried about it getting dirty, white turning yellow, stuff like that. Its gonna be a simple dress, but I have three cats and a dog I REALLY don't want them finding away to snuggle on top of it.
Should I just put it in like a plastic bag? Or what?

A. Where do you have your sewing machine set up? If it's in a spare bedroom, keep the door shut all the time and don't allow the pets in.

Don't worry about it turning yellow, that usually takes years. Don't store it in plastic, fabric needs to breathe.

When I'm working on a sewing project, I fold and leave everything on my sewing table and cover it with a large towel or sheet. But this would mean that your sewing machine is off limits to the pets. Hang it on hangers in a closet, keep the door closed. Find a wedding dress size garment bag. You will need it to take your dress to the venue, if you're getting dressed there. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=gown+garment+bag&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=11207277680036770913&sa=X&ei=cjhZT9O1DofliAKG3YimCw&ved=0CJABEPMCMAE

Totally cool that you're making your own dress. Makes your dress all the more special. My mom made hers and when we were kids, my sister & I thought it was the most beautiful thing we had ever seen.
