Does anyone know how much alterations run at David's Bridal for a wedding dress?

Q. I think that I just need to have the halter part of the dress altered to be smaller on my wedding dress. They don't give an estimate over the phone or on their website. Does anyone know what the alterations run or have a guestamit?

A. It totally depends how much you need done to the dress and how complex the construction of your particular dress is. If you really only need the halter done, they have 3 prices (simple, intermediate, difficult), so it'd be either $20, $30, or $40.

They cant give quotes without seeing you in it, because if it turns out you need more than you thought and they didnt quote for the unexpected alterations, some people get kinda upset about the sudden jump in price. I'm a seamstress, and i've heard lots of times, "but they said it would only cost.... but they said, so i shouldnt have to pay more than that..." ya know? Just covering their butts that way. If you have a train that needs to bustled too, the bustle can be as low as $35 - $65, or as high as the sky's the limit, depending on how many buslte points you need. "The skys the limit" would be like, really crazy-fancy bustles with lots of ties or buttons or whatever. Hems are $75 to $120. A lot of times, people with halter dresses have the issue of the dress gaping at the side, like where people can kinda peek in and see boobage. If thats an issue, taking in the princess seams (the curved seams that run over the "the girls") can help, and would cost anywhere from $35 to $85-ish for a set of seams (average is $50 to $65).

Anyways, hope that helps a bit. If you do decide to have your dress altered by someone else, keep in mind that Davids does the one free pressing, spot cleaning, bead checking, but they WONT do it after its altered by someone else. So youd have to have that done first.

Is buying a wedding dress smaller than what I wear a mistake?
Q. I found a wedding dress that I absolutely love. However it is a size 10 and I currently am a size16. My wedding is over 18 months away, and I do want to loose the weight; but is 3-4 dress sizes too much?
I'm not buying it form a dress shop

A. Yes, that's a huge mistake. You should wait until your wedding is a bit closer before buying a dress (nine or so months before the wedding is a good time).

I had a friend who bought her dress a few sizes smaller than what she actually was because she figured she'd lose the weight. Long story short, she didn't lose the weight and had to have the back changed from a zipper to a lace-up back. That alteration cost her quite a bit of money.

How much does it cost to clean a wedding dress?
Q. I am about to sell my wedding dress. It will need to be cleaned so I don't want to overprice it and then that person have to pay to get it cleaned also. Just cleaned, not preserved in middle TN. Thanks

A. Do you have a customer in mind? If so, I would give her a credit for the cleaning, because if she has any alterations done, she will probably want to send it to a cleaners for pressing.

I paid $225 for my daughter's dress, but that was also for preserving.

Good luck.

How long does a rushed Alfred Angelo wedding dress need to come in?
Q. I ordered my wedding dress at the start of April and had it rushed. They promised end of May. My dress is still not here on June 17th! Is this normal, or did I waste money on a rush? My wedding is July 23rd.

A. You have to call the shop where you ordered it, only they can tell you when it will come in. At this point, you better hope they have an awesome seamstress who can do your alterations right the first time and get it done in like a week. My alterations took 4 mos and my gown wasn't ready until 3 days before my wedding even though I lied and told them my wedding was a month before the actual date. You better call that shop every single day until your dress comes in.

how much does it normally cost for a wedding dress to be altered?
Q. When I purchased by wedding dress it fit perfectly. However, I have lost some weight since the initial fitting and I was wondering how much the alterations for a wedding dress normally run.

A. It's a lot of money for the little altering they do. When I got my dress at David's Bridal (BIG mistake) they tried to charge me just $90 for taking my measurements...something I could have told them. I ended up getting that charge taken off as I was told by a new sales associate working there the whole cost of taking up the hem and getting fitted would be less than $100. To take up the hem, if I remember I think it was another $100, which in itself is a bit ridiculous, even though it had 4 layers to it...it was still way too much. So if you're getting your dress fitted and altered at a place like David's Bridal where they have to pay for their advertisement, chances are you'll be paying a lot. Take the dress to a private seamstress or a drycleaners.

If you're just getting the sides taken in and there is minimal design (sequins, rouching, etc) the cost should be no more than $50 for a private seamstress. At least that's what I would charge. And an additional $15 if there is any detail. If they need to measure you and want to charge you for it, resist, and tell them your measurements, if you know them.

I actually needed my dress taken in at the sides, but because of cost I didn't have that done. So I ended up with a gown that was falling off of me and I didn't even do any dancing for that to happen, so even if you're running on a budget, better to have the dress fit you than have horrible posture your whole night, and be uncomfortable. If you know how to do a little sewing, you can do it yourself. It's pretty easy.
